Apply the Java 25 baseline first. Use these rules for com.google.genai:google-genai:1.68.0 on Java 25, including Gemini Developer API, the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform/Vertex AI backend, and the generated agent APIs exposed through Client.

Client, backend, and credentials

  • Build clients in trusted server code with explicit enterprise(false) for Developer API or enterprise(true) for the cloud backend. vertexAI is an alias; conflicting explicit flags throw, while GOOGLE_GENAI_USE_ENTERPRISE takes precedence over GOOGLE_GENAI_USE_VERTEXAI. Setting an API key alone does not override backend selection.
  • Select one credential mode: a server-held API key, or cloud project/location with least-privilege workload identity or attached-service-account ADC. Remove unused credential environment variables; GOOGLE_API_KEY takes precedence over GEMINI_API_KEY, and explicit cloud credentials/project settings can supersede environment keys. Never accept credential configuration from a request.
  • Set cloud project and location explicitly and enforce the permitted region before dispatch; omitted location can resolve to global. Separate projects and service identities where tenant isolation requires independent provider permissions and quotas.
  • Pin an API version compatible with each enabled feature through HttpOptions.apiVersion; ordinary clients default to v1beta for Developer API and v1beta1 for the cloud backend. Use v1 where the required feature supports it, and test preview features against this exact SDK rather than assuming current examples
