Apply to the openai Python SDK 3 API surface used by the application, with the included Python baseline. Older SDK releases have no guaranteed fixes or security backports. Minor releases can change runtime requirements, types and helper behavior; check optional APIs and provider capabilities against the installed SDK and service. APIs described here may be absent from earlier 3.x minors.

Client identity and credentials

  • Construct OpenAI or AsyncOpenAI clients from trusted service configuration. Keep API keys, organization/project selection, workload identity, data_residency, and endpoint selection outside user and model control; isolate clients across credential or tenant boundaries instead of mutating module globals or openai.api_type/OPENAI_API_TYPE provider selection.
  • Control the process environment or pass explicit values: omitted arguments are read from OPENAI_API_KEY, OPENAI_ADMIN_KEY, OPENAI_ORG_ID, OPENAI_PROJECT_ID, OPENAI_WEBHOOK_SECRET and OPENAI_BASE_URL.
  • Keep OPENAI_CUSTOM_HEADERS under deployment control; do not use it to supply Authorization. Ambient authorization does not satisfy the client credential gate, can override generated credentials and survives ordinary client copies. Reject authorization overrides in every header-name casing.
  • Give application credentials only the project permissions they need. Keep administration keys, including OPENAI_ADMIN_KEY, and webhook-management operations out of ordinary inference processes; never send long-lived service credentials to browser or mobile code.
  • Configure workload
